Greenbelt, a new 8-unit building in Williamsburg, is the first LEED- certified apartment building in Brooklyn, and the first LEED-certified performance space in all of NYC. The building offers an example of green development that provides not only sustainable living space, but also a gathering place for people concerned with the environment. The ground floor houses a multi-purpose performance space for local performance artists and entertainers. This exemplifies the community-minded spirit in which Greenbelt was developed, since the site was formerly a community theater that had fallen into disrepair.
Greenbelt provides approximately 45% energy savings and 30% water conservation, using 40% recycled or rapidly renewable materials, and provides fresh filtered air and finishes free of harmful chemicals. In 2008, Greenbelt received a Green Cinderella Award from National Grid (formerly KeySpan) in recognition of excellence in energy-efficient design with a community focus.
Green Depot supplied many of the materials used in construction, including recycled steel studs, recycled gypsum panels, sound attenuation products and no-VOC insulation. Green Depot also supported the project by handling much of the LEED documentation and backup that can often be onerous for a developer.
