Leed Certification

The LEED certification process is not complex, though there are prerequisites that need to be met and procedures that need to be followed.

Guidelines for specific programs can be found on the LEED section of the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) website. It is important to start early on thinking about green. Design and construction can be done much more cost effectively when green is considered from the onset of the project.

Prior to beginning the certification process, you must first determine under which LEED program the project is eligible.

Why Build LEED?

There are many reasons why building LEED is a smart decision, not the least of which is that in today’s marketplace, it just makes dollars and sense.

But there’s much more to it:

▪While overall construction numbers are down, the demand for green building design and construction continues to boom

▪With the boom in green construction, increasing numbers of builders are jumping in to satisfy this demand

▪Companies and individuals throughout the industry understand that certification brings added value to their building projects

What is LEED?

The LEED® (The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System™ was first developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in 1998 as a way to encourage the development and implementation of green building practices. As the following statistics demonstrate, LEED has become the pre-eminent green building rating system in the U.S.:

▪$12 billion: Annual market for green building products and services

▪$1.1 billion+: Square feet of LEED registered or certified commercial building space

▪6,000: Individual homes in LEED pilot program

▪54,567: Professionals trained through LEED workshops
