Anthony F. Altmann
Co-Founder & CEO, Intl Renewables Group, LLC

Anthony F. Altmann is the Co-Founder and CEO of International Renewables Group, LLC, a company focused on service and support for builders, owners and operators of renewable energy and bio-fuel installations using various technologies. He has been in the forefront of energy industry change and evolution since the 1980s.

Before starting IRG with former FPL Group colleagues, Mr. Altmann was Division President of FPL Group’s wholesale energy operation and a top level FPL executive. At FPL he spearheaded key initiatives for expansion of FPL into independent power in multiple markets. His groups managed all physical and financial aspects of power, gas and oil from supply, transportation to all sales contracts covering 22,000 MW of power generation. His area of responsibility included numerous renewable energy projects (wind, solar, biomass, geothermal, hydro) both inside and outside of Florida. He oversaw the development and operation of one of the most active physical wholesale power operating groups in North America and provided strategic direction and support to the company on all aspects of fuels supply, storage and transportation as well as power markets that helped FPL’s rapid expansion in the independent power business.

Mr. Altmann helped launch his division and was brought in to operationally re-engineer and re-shape strategy for both regulated and un-regulated business units. Mr. Altmann grew his division from $600 Mil to over $3Bil achieving top industry results. At FPl he created one of the most active USA physical power and logistics business that included power transmission contracts, gas pipeline investments and supply contracts and liquid fuel terminals and supply agreements in 14 states. His teams were instrumental in helping FPL Group grow a significant portfolio (acquisitions, new development etc) of renewable energy projects with critical tactical and operating support.

Before joining FPL in the mid-1990s, Mr. Altmann spent time as an energy entrepreneur working closely with KeySpan Energy. Mr. Altmann and KeySpan formed a joint venture in the early 1990s to create one of the first on-line power trading businesses, catering to independent power producers (PowerNet).

During the 1980s, Mr. Altmann rose from Vice President-Finance to President, CEO and Director of Allegheny & Western, a highly successful integrated natural gas company that he joined upon its IPO. At A& W he oversaw the financing, acquisition and restructuring of a major gas distribution operation. He was the principal negotiator with Columbia Gas System and the State of West Virginia PSC leading the effort to complete this complex acquisition which included restructuring numerous high-priced gas supply and transportation contracts. He led the firm’s efforts to expand its drilling operations, field services business and international joint ventures. He was a key architect of efforts that led A&W to be recognized as a Top 15 Fastest Growing Company by INC Magazine.

In addition to being an investor and partner in his own renewable energy company, Mr. Altmann has been an active participant (investor, partner etc) in several private South Florida businesses where he actively performs turn-arounds or start-ups (chemicals, medical services, corrosion monitoring devices); he currently sits on several private company boards. Due in large part to his successfully building high-performance organizations/teams in fast changing markets, Mr. Altmann has been called on to provide investment and advisory advice to major energy companies and private equity firms, often focused on providing tactical ‘next level’ planning and tactical support. Mr. Altmann sits on the Advisory Board for the ‘Monterey Climate Exchange’ a new California based carbon trading marketplace.

A native of NYC, Mr. Altmann is a graduate of Boston College, where he earned a degree with honors in Economics. He holds an MBA in Finance from Columbia University in NYC. He is active in charitable efforts in South Florida and is also a long-standing member of the Young Presidents Organization (YPO).
